Cornelia Dudley Griggs
Funeral services for Cornelia Dudley Griggs, of Shady Dale, were held Saturday, June 30 at Shiloh Baptist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery. The Rev. Jimmy Horton officiated.
She died Wednesday, June 20 at the Abbey Hospice Center in Social Circle.
Mrs. Griggs was born September 24, 1917 to the late Willie Lee and Hattie M. Dudley in Putnam County. At an early age she joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Farrar where she served on the Mother Board and the Shiloh Burial Society. As a faithful member of Shiloh, she rarely missed a service until her recent illness.
Mother Dudley was infamous for lending a helping hand to others. She was known as the lady who lived in the house on the corner of Post Road and Martin Lane who would welcome anyone hungry to her table—never turning anyone away.
Three sons, Jimmy L. Jefferies, Sr., Willie Lee Jefferies and Nathaniel Jefferies, Jr., and a daughter, Rosa Mae Harris, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Augusta Griggs, Sr. of Covington; five children, Dorothy Alexander of Lithonia, Roy Gaither of Decatur, Augusta Griggs, Jr. of Stone Mountain, Jessie James Griggs, and Johnny Lee Griggs, both of Shady Dale; two stepsons, James Jefferies and Coy Jefferies, both of Lithonia; sister, Willie Maude White of Oakland, Cal.; brother, Leroy Dudley of Shady Dale; 81 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 36 great-great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-great-grandchildren; and number of other relatives and friends.
Donald Trimble Mortuary, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
