Lady ‘Canes Need Win

The Lady ‘Canes softball team needs one more win to secure a berth in the playoffs.

They couldn’t get that win this past Monday in their last home game of the season when they lost their second game of the season to the number two ranked GMC Lady Bulldogs 10-0. The good news is they will get another chance to pick up that win today.

In the game versus GMC, it was only the second region loss of the year for the Lady ‘Canes, both to GMC, giving them a 5-2 region record.

Monday’s game was re-scheduled from last Thursday when GMC came here but lightning was too close to allow the ladies to play.

After giving up two runs in the first and two in the second on three hits, two walks and two errors, the Lady ‘Canes played perfect defense for the next three innings and were only down 4-0 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth the team gave up two more runs on two hits, a sacrifice fly and an error. And in the top of the seventh, the Lady Bulldogs picked up four more runs on four hits and a fielder’s choice.

It seemed as if everything dropped for the Lady Bulldogs and everything hit by the Lady ‘Canes went directly to someone, and they were held hitless until the bottom of the fourth when Shelby Britt belted a triple to the right field fence.

Megan Studdard slammed a single in the sixth and Ty Whitening picked up a single in the bottom of the seventh. Other than those three scattered hits the Lady ‘Canes just couldn’t get their bats going.

Head Coach Chris Jenkins said, “It was like we relaxed a little toward the end of the game and they took advantage of that. To give them credit, they did hit the ball well.”
The team is scheduled to play Hancock Central today at 5 p.m. in Sparta, a team they defeated 6-5 earlier in the season.

This game will be a do-or-die situation for the team. A loss will end their season, but a win will put them at 6-2 and lock in second place in the region and send them to the Region Cross Over on Oct. 13 to determine a seed, and on to the State Sectionals later this month.
