JV Cougars Win 28-16

Piedmont Academy’s junior varsity football team put one in the win column Tuesday by defeating Westminster 28-16.

In what was a back-and-forth contest, the JV Cougars trailed 16-14 at halftime but were able to make some necessary adjustments to rally in the third and fourth quarters.

Coach Wes Tanner credited all of his eighth grade players for believing in what the coaches were teaching this season.

Eighth grade players for the JV Cougars include Seth Harvey, Daniel Leinweber, Justin Wilson, Chandler Sanders, Davis Kimball, Taylor Fields, Zach Benjamin and Drew Odegaard.

“They believed in what we taught and from a coaching standpoint, that means the world to myself, Coach Ready and Coach Brown,” Tanner said. “I am very proud of the team and coaching staff for all of their hard work this season.”

In Tuesday’s win, Tanner said Leinweber deserved credit for his versatile role. The eighth grader started the game at center before moving to guard and even then to fullback and halfback. Tanner said Leinweber will be a special player for years to come.

Prior to Tuesday’s win, the Piedmont JV dropped a 12-0 decision to Flint River last Wednesday afternoon.

“The game was very competitive until the end,” Tanner said. “It was 6-0 at halftime, but we could just never seem to get anything going offensively. We would do well for a few plays and then seem to take a play off and that one play would hurt us.”

The coach said his team did play hard as it usually does and fought until the final buzzer. Late in the game, the JV Cougars had a goal line stand.

“The boys were down after the game and really felt like it was theirs for the taking,” Tanner said. “I am really proud of what these young men have done this year overcoming so much adversity and I have been truly blessed to have this bunch and I am looking forward to seeing them grow during our time here at Piedmont.”
