Jasper Has Two Fatal Wrecks

Benjamin Allen Rowland, 43, of Carrollton was killed Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving collided with another on Hwy. 212 west of Monticello near the intersection with Jackson Lake Road.

According to Trooper Bailey of the Madison post of the Georgia State Patrol, Dawia Michelle Craig of Monticello was traveling west on Hwy. 212 and Mr. Rowland was traveling east. It appears Ms. Craig had crossed the center line and was traveling in the eastbound lane when Mr. Rowland approached and saw her. He proceeded to move into the westbound lane to avoid hitting her at the same time she realized she was in the wrong lane, and began moving into the correct lane.

The vehicles hit in the center of the yellow line, and after rotating, they came to rest very close to the point of impact, both facing north. Ms. Craig was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where her injuries are not thought to be critical.

On Monday morning, Jennifer Smith of Forsyth was killed when the car she was driving collided with another at the intersection of Hwys. 212 east and 380. According to the preliminary report from Georgia State Patrol Trooper R. Thacker, Ms. Smith was traveling west on 380 in a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro (middle photo).

Miss Slavens was traveling west on Hwy. 212 in a 2007 Nissan Altima. Ms. Smith apparently failed to yield at the intersection, and her car was struck by that of Miss Slavens. The impact occurred in the middle of state route 212, the report said.

Ms. Smith’s vehicle traveled 72 feet before leaving the road, and came to its final rest down an embankment. The vehicle driven by Miss Slavens continued west after the impact, traveling 158 feet before leaving the roadway. The car came to rest upside down about 12 feet from the roadway edge after overturning one time, according to the preliminary report from GSP.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) from Forsyth will investigate both accidents further.
