‘Cane Golfers Still Alive for Playoffs
After all the rain the ‘Cane golf teams got in three matches last week.
On Thursday of last week the boys outscored Alcovy 368 to 372 in 18 holes and won the close match by four strokes. Colton Strawn was the low medalist with a 76. Matt Allen shot a 95, his best score ever, and was the fourth medalist. Cody Walls was the fifth medalist and Jensen Peek was seventh.
The girls lost the match to Alcovy, but Head Golf Coach Matt Tumlin said the match was good region experience for them.
Prior to that match the boys played Oglethorpe and Washington-Wilkes at Sunrise Golf Course in Colbert. Oglethorpe won, Washington-Wilkes was second the ‘Canes came in third. Strawn was the second low medalist.
The girls placed second behind Oglethorpe, and Jessica Massey was the second low medalist.
Before that match the team traveled to Milledgeville and teed off at The Little Fishing Creek Course versus Baldwin and GMC. Baldwin placed first and the ‘Canes came in third, just two strokes behind GMC. Strawn was the second low medalist and Peek was eighth low medalist, out of 18 golfers.
Neither GMC nor Baldwin fielded a girl’s team, so the girls picked up a win via forfeit.
The boys and girls were scheduled to travel to Eaton this past Tuesday to begin the region tournament at the Uncle Remus Golf Course. If they don’t win or come in second, the year is over. Coach Tumlin said, “If they shoot like they did Thursday we have a good chance to advance to the state tournament on May 4 in Vadalia. And Colton is personally gunning for low medalist, because regardless of how the team does the low medalist goes to the state individual tournament.”
This match was too late to report in this edition.
