Selena Vesta LaMar

Selena Vesta LaMar of Newborn, 76, died June 15, 2009, following an extended illness.

Ms. LaMar was born December 17, 1932, in Mims, Fla., to Homer and Annie Hallum. She was the oldest of four children and the only girl.

Although Ms. LaMar worked various jobs over the years none was as rewarding to her as being a caregiver. First to her children, then in 1970, she moved to Jasper County to care for her brother who died last year. She began raising her first granddaughter in the 70s, the second came along in the 90s, both calling her “Mom”. During the 70s and 80s, she was also a foster mom to many kids.

Survivors include her brother, three children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ms. LaMar will be held Friday, June 19, at 2 p.m., at Akins Funeral Home in Blue Ridge, with Glen Collis officiating, and interment following at Colwell Baptist Church.
