‘Canes Fall to Social Circle

Joe Standifer (8) Runs Ball

In a hard fought battle last Friday night the ‘Canes lost their third straight to Social Circle, 21-13.

Quarterback Keldrick Davis broke his toe after practice last Thursday, but still played in the game, however, it could have affected his play. Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jimmy Hughes said, “We put a special shoe on him, but the second half told the story, he was in a lot of pain and he wasn’t able to do some of the things he could normally have.

“But we’re not using that as an excuse. The problem was we didn’t cover our kick off well and gave up a long return and they got it right inside of our 10-yard line. This was right after we had used the first seven minutes of the game to score a touchdown.

“In a matter of 15 seconds after we kicked off to them the game was tied 6-6 after we both missed the extra point. We took it right back down and scored again and then they did the same to us, went for two, made it, and led us 14-13.
“At the time I figured it would be a high scoring game, but then it turned into a field position game and there was no more points scored until there was less than four minutes to go in the game.

“We missed a field goal in the third quarter, which would have put us ahead. It was a tough kick with a hard angle. In the second half we had the ball four times inside their 40 and didn’t get any points out of it.

“I don’t know how the kids could have played any harder, they played about as hard as you can play, and we were proud of them.

“I was also proud of our coaches, we had a good plan, but we just didn’t get some things done, and the injury to our quarterback could have had something to do with it, but to win close games you have to play through things like that.
“We’ll keep Keldrick out of contact this week in practice just to try and get him well. The health of our players is more important to us than winning a football game. We’ve lost Tyler Bailey for the year due to a sternum injury. We do hope to get SaDarius Rooks back in a couple of weeks.”

The ‘Canes travel to Zebulon this Friday to take on Pike County. Coach Hughes said, “They won nine games last year and went to the playoffs. They did lose some players, but they still dress out over 90 kids. They beat us last year, and we’re looking forward to playing them.

“I believe our team has the desire to turn this thing around and win some games instead of just playing in them. We’ll be ready and have a good plan for them.”

Coach Hughes added that the JV ‘Canes are scheduled to play their first game on September 10, and the MS ‘Canes were to play their first game yesterday versus Youth in Loganville.
