Pop’s Barbecue Burglary Solved

Jamie Leanne Blackmon of Monticello has been arrested and charged with burglary in connection with a break-in of Pop’s Barbecue on West Washington St.

According to the reports from the police department and magistrate court, some time during the night last Wednesday, Sept. 16 or in the early hours of the 17th, Pop’s was broken into and the cash register was taken. The cash register contained cash and rolled coins.

A tip led investigators with the Monticello Police Department (MPD) to the Circle K where the rolled coins had been cashed in, which were then positively identified (the wrappers) by the owner of the burglarized establishment.
Circle K does require a name and phone number to cash in rolls of coins. Ms. Blackmon’s name and number on the coin wrappers led investigators to the arrest. Also, since then, Ms. Blackmon has confessed to the crime.

According to Monticello Police Chief Bud Smith, this burglary has no connection to the recent one at the Big Chic. He advised an arrest warrant has been issued in this case, but not served yet. He also advised the investigation of the recent burglary at Hunter Pope Golf Course is ongoing.
