Baseball ‘Canes Drop Two

Prior to spring break this week, the baseball ‘Canes traveled to Lamar and lost a close non-region game 7-6.

Even though the ‘Canes out hit Lamar 10-8, they also committed six errors, four of which occurred in the first inning resulting in giving up three runs. The loss drops the ‘Canes record to 6-6.

The ‘Canes evened the score 3-3 in the top of the second when Colt Spivey led off with a single, and courtesy runner Chris Sands moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by A.J.
Thomas. The run scored later on an error by Lamar, which left Brady McMichael at second base. Kevin Camp then hit a home run over the left field wall to tie the game.

In the top of the third the ‘Canes took a 4-3 lead after Daniel Jackson reached on a two-out Lamar error. Courtesy runner Billy Edwards then scored when Spivey hit an RBI single to center.

The ‘Canes went up 5-3 in the top of the fourth when Cody Arnold reached first base on an error, then moved to second when Camp singled, after which he scored on a two out single by Colby Byrd.

Lamar tied the score 5-5 with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the score remained the same until the ‘Canes regained the lead 6-5 in the top of the last inning when Jackson hit a one-out single and a courtesy runner scored on an RBI single by Thomas, however, Lamar picked up two runs in the last inning to secure the win.

Jackson took the loss on the mound, only giving up two earned runs, no walks and recording two strikeouts.
Camp led the hitting by going 2-3 with a home run, two RBI and scored a run; Spivey went 2-3 with a RBI; Jackson went 2-4; Thomas went 1-3 with a RBI; Arnold went 1-3 and scored a run; Byrd went 1-3 with a RBI; and Dee Chapman went 1-4.

Earlier in the week the ‘Canes suffered a set back in region play with an 11-1 loss to Central, which dropped them into third place in Region 4-AA.

The ‘Canes tied the score 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Chapman tripled to right and scored on a grounder by Spivey.

In the bottom of the fifth Central blew the game open by scoring 10 runs on eight hits combined with three ‘Cane errors, resulting in the termination of play due to the 10-run lead rule.
Byrd took the loss, giving up four earned runs, two walks and recorded two strikeouts.

The ‘Cane’s bats turned cold and the only two hits were a triple by Jackson and a triple by Chapman.

The ‘Canes return to action tomorrow at home versus Southwest with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
