First Contest Is Easy Pickin’

“Summertime and the pickin’ is easy.”

That might be a lyric for The Monticello News Football Contest first week—many colleges picked easy opponents for their opening games, making it easy for contest players who turned out in record numbers. And, the pros had not yet begun.

A whopping 138 contest entrants qualified for the grand prize honor roll including 10 who picked winners of all 15 games listed.
Of those, 10-year-old O’Neil Sealy came closest on her tiebreaker guess of 56 points to win the $25 prize offered by the Bank of Monticello, the week’s prize sponsor. Her tiebreaker guess was one off of the 55 scored in the Jackson-Monticello contest, 34-21.

The fifth grader at Piedmont Academy collected a $25 check from Wendy Helms, compliance officer at the Bank of Monticello. She said she was going to save the money for a car. Miss Sealy, the daughter of Shane and Jennifer Sealy of Monticello, is a regular entrant in The Monticello News football contest, and has been on the honor roll many times, but she has never won before, she said. Her mother has won previously.

Besides the 10 entrants who had 15 right, another 27 entrants had 14 right; 59 had 13, and 42 had 12, totaling 146 eligible for honor roll. There were nearly 250 entrants in the opening week’s contest, perhaps the easiest one of the year.

With Labor Day past, this week is more like fall than summer for gridiron action—many major colleges face serious opposition and the pros are in action. So picking may not be so easy, but there’s one guarantee: whoever picks the most winners in the contest, subject to the tiebreaker, will win a $25 prize from Piedmont Academy, this week’s prize sponsor.

The contest and complete rules are on page 11. Entries may be submitted in person, by fax or by mail, but they must be at The Monticello News office, 237 West Washington St., Monticello, no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 10.

The results of all the games listed last week are: Jackson 34, Monticello 21; Piedmont 27, Griffin Christian 13; Morgan County 55, Avondale 0; LSU 30, North Carolina 24; Georgia 55, Louisiana -Lafayette 7; Georgia Tech 41, S.C.
