Lady Canes Win Two, Advance

The Lady ‘Canes began region playoffs Tuesday with a double header against the Putnam County Lady Eagles.
The first game the Lady ‘Canes won in five short innings 8-0.
Taylor Garrett was on the mound and got the shut out. She did a great job of getting ahead of the batters all day, making her tough to hit which was proven with no runs scored in the first game.
The defense played as well as it has all season with two “highlight reel” catches, one by Aaliyah Barnes, catcher; and the other at shortstop by Sharika Pennamon.
The defense did well and made play easy in several three up, three down innings.
“It was nice to see us correct some of the mistakes that were made in previous games,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins of his defense.
After a brief break the ‘Lady Canes were back at it again and played another good game.
The Lady ‘Canes were at bat first and scored one run. Then the Lady Eagles came back and took the lead. The Lady ‘Canes got rattled, and made some defensive errors.
Once they settled down, the Lady ‘Canes re-took the lead with some good hitting.
It was a back and forth game up until the bottom of the fourth when the ‘Canes batted around scoring four more times. Then Paissley Stewart hit an over the fence home run making the score 12-4. At present, this makes Ms. Stewart the school’s career leader in this category, and she is only a sophomore.
“That was one of the most impressive hitting performances that I’ve seen, at any level,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins on Ms. Stewart’s hitting performance.
Both Ms. Stewart and Janee Chapman had big days offensively. Ms. Chapman reached base safely on 7 of 8 plate appearances.
These two wins make it the sixth year straight that the Lady ‘Canes have qualified for state playoffs. The ladies will be vying for their third region title this weekend.
“Hopefully we’ll continue to have good practices, and carry this momentum throughout the rest of the postseason.”
