Only 3 Players Get 12 in Tough Week

Garrett Kirksey, Chris Castellana

Nine-year-old Garrett Kirksey told his parents he would do his football contest on his own last week without any coaching from mom or dad.

They all three play every week, and the third grader often gets some help. He refused it this week, and it paid off. He didn’t pick Dad’s favorite team, Georgia Tech, to win, nor did he pick its nemesis, Georgia to win. He was one of the few contest players that did not pick either of them to win. They both lost.

In the pros Dallas, Tennessee and and Kansas City were considered underdogs and almost nobody picked all three to win, but Garrett picked two of the three. He ended up with 12 correct picks—a record for the week.

He, along with Taylor Fields and Trevor Wilson, correctly picked the winners in 12 of the 15 games listed. Garrett won with his tie-breaker guess of 50, higher than either of the other persons with 12 right. So, Garrett picked up a $25 gift certificate from Chris Castellana at Frank’s Restaurant, sponsor of the week. And, he got a “3” by his name on the honor roll.

That’s the way the contest goes. One week more than 100 get 12 or more right, and the next week only three players get 12 right. And, as the third child collected his prize this year, it’s obvious you don’t have to be a football expert to win.

Anyone can play—it’s easy. Just fill out the entry form on page 15 of today’s paper, or write your picks on another piece of paper; choose a tie-breaker score, write your name and phone number on the entry and get it to The Monticello News office.

Entries may be submitted in person at 237 West Washington Street, about a half-block off the Square; by fax at 706-468-6576, or by mail. But, all entries must be in the office no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 1.

The winner will pick up a prize worth $25 from Eden Massage, sponsor of the week. And, everyone who correctly guesses the winners in as many as 12 games listed will have his or her name added to the sit for the grand prize honor roll—a trip for four to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta New Year’s eve.
