Benefit Barbecue is Set Saturday

This Saturday, Oct. 9, there will be a barbecue fund raiser on the square in Monticello, to benefit Steve Michael, a long time resident of Monticello and father to three children.

He is also a member of The Church at Monticello (TCAM), volunteer in a local youth ministry, member of B.O.W. “(Brotherhood Of the Way,)” a local Christian men’s fellowship, an activist against alcohol and drug use among teens; and he is a paraplegic. Steve is one of the most impacting personalities in our community, and even though he is paralyzed from the neck down, he is one of the most positive people you will ever meet.

Steve was involved in a horrific automobile accident 10 years ago that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After his recovery, he became a resident of the nursing home in Monticello, and remained there for six years; two years ago he was blessed with a home of his own where he now lives by himself with the aid of home care nurses.

Steve is very involved in his local church where he serves in leadership as a member of the Pastoral Counsel, and a member of the Quest Student Ministries staff, where he fights to make sure that young people turn from the decisions to use alcohol and drugs.

Steve has recently had to purchase a new handicapped equipped van, an unforeseen purchase, that was necessary due to the condition of the old van he was using for transportation.

This benefit BBQ will raise the needed sum of $2,000 to finish paying off Steve’s new van, a 1996 Chevy Astro. In addition to these monies, TCAM also hopes to raise additional funds to assist Steve with on-going living expenses, as well as his medical trips to the Shepherd’s Spinal Center in Atlanta.

The Church at Monticello will begin serving barbecue plates at 11 a.m. this Saturday. The plates will cost $7 each, and each plate will consist of pulled pork, beans, slaw, chips, sauce, pickles, bread, and a bottle of water. Desserts baked by the women of the Lighthouse Mennonite Church will also be available for purchase.

Whole Boston butts, and half butts will also be available for purchase. Each purchased plate will also register you for a chance to win a new laptop computer so plan to buy more than one!
There will also be a special service on Sunday morning at the Church at Monticello, where Steve will be sharing his testimony, and speaking on drug and alcohol use to teenagers.

If you have a student in school, between the grades of six and 12, you do not want to miss this service! Please plan to come and hear about the realities of where substance abuse can lead you, and about what is really a stake every time you use.

The service will begin at 10:45 a.m. For more information, call Pastor Jason Parr at 706-476-4586.
