Lady Canes Are Headed to State

The Lady ‘Canes defeated Crawford County 16-8 last Thursday in a game which determined the number three and four seeds in the state tournament.

By winning, the Lady ‘Canes were paired as a number three seed versus Appling County and were to travel to Baxley yesterday for a best two-of-three series.

The first game was scheduled for 4 p.m. with the second to follow immediately, and if needed, a third game scheduled today with the time still undetermined.

The Lady ‘Canes will have their work cut out for them as the Appling County Lady Pirates finished the season 23-8 overall and 8-0 in their region.

According to Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins, the team has been working on fundamentals to prepare for the tournament. “That’s the key for us,” he said.

“If we can play good solid defense we can compete with most anybody. But defense has been our Achilles Hill throughout the season. Injury could also have an impact on how we play, because due to injuries, we’re down to one pitcher and one catcher.”

Should the Lady ‘Canes prevail they would advance to play the winner of the Dodge County, Brooks County game.
