Piedmont Basketball Boys Win Opener
With only one day of practice, the Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team ushered in the new season Tuesday night with a 45-34 victory against Flint River at home.
Justin Wilson scored 16 points while Bobby Mitchell added 15 for first-year head coach Josh Daher.
“I am really proud of how well the team competed,” Daher said. “We have a long way to go to get to where I would like for us to be, but it was a great start to the season.”
Daher is a former standout player at George Walton Academy in Monroe where he helped the Bulldogs earn two state championships.
The Piedmont Lady Cougars fell 56-36 Tuesday night to Flint River as first-year coach Wes Tanner said the game was a learning experience.
“Hopefully this will be something we will be able to look back on and see how much better we will get,” Tanner said.
Hailey Burnham paced the Piedmont girls with 16 points while Rachel Maletz scored eight and Heather Tyler added six.
“I can tell you this is a tough bunch who will continue to get better each game and that starts with good practices between now and Friday when we play Nathanael Greene,” Tanner said.
“We talked about the season being a journey, not a sprint. We want to continue to get better each night out and just continue to progress.”
The Piedmont teams will host Nathanael Greene Friday and John Hancock Tuesday.
Varsity games begin at 6 p.m. both nights.
