Hurricane Varsity Wrestlers Are 9-1

MAT CANES WRESTLING TEAM WINS TOURNAMENT IN MILLEDGEVILLE

Last Saturday the Varsity Mat ’Canes traveled to Milledgeville to participate in the Baldwin Brawl, which included six teams, and won the tournament.
It was the first tournament win in ‘Cane wrestling history.
Thirteen wrestlers made the trip and six placed first, six placed second and one placed third.
The six first place champions, who all finished 5-0, included Justin Bradley at 103 pounds, Nick Tarleton at 112, Jonathan Williams at 140, Patrick Clement at 152, Oscar Sandoval at 171 and Timmy Postlethwait at 215.
Right now Sandoval, Clement and Postlethwait are all undefeated at 10-0.
Prior to this tournament the team hosted Crawford County, Jones County and Jackson on November 23. The ‘Canes defeated Jones and Jackson and lost by only three points to Crawford.
In their first match of the year on November 19 the team defeated GMC and Southwest.
Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis gave his thoughts on his team when he said, “This is basically the same bunch we had last year, except we are a year older, stronger and smarter. We only lost two seniors last year and I think experience is carrying us right now because we have 10 wrestlers who lettered last year.
“We also have two kids who wrestled for us two years ago and have come back. Kyle Bemis and Patrick Hutchinson are helping us.
“Brandon Barger, who placed sixth in the state last year, is still out with a football injury, and Justin Van Horn is also out with an injury. Both of these wrestlers should be a great help to us when they come back.
“We’ve got a good mix with experience, some new people and the ones who sat out last year, but competition is going to get a lot tougher in a hurry.”
The team traveled to Watkinsville Tuesday for a tournament including Oconnee County, Franklin County and Washington-Wilkes, too late to report in this issue.
Tomorrow, December 3, they travel to Greensboro to take on Green County and Blessed Trinity at 5:30 p.m., and this Saturday, December 4, they travel to Warner Robbins for the Veteran’s Duals beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Next Tuesday, December 7, they travel to Athens to face Athens Christian at 5:30 p.m.
The JV, also coached by Coach Rewis, traveled to Conyers on November 20. Edgar Bautista at 125 pounds placed third in that tournament, while Austin New at 130, Jacob Carr at 140, Brian Harper at 145 and Alex Davis at 215 all placed fourth.
The Middle School, coached by Paul Stokes, traveled to the Athens Christian Invitational on November 20, in which Herman Bautista at 119, Crenscencio Perez at 125 and Chase Helms all placed first.
Sam Bellew at 156 placed second, Tyler Seawright in the heavyweight class placed third, and Michael Carrera at 156 placed fourth.
