Mat Canes Compete on the Road

Beginning with last Saturday, the ‘Canes traveled to Warner Robbins for the Veteran’s Duals Match and won three of their five matches, and their loss to North Side was only by three points.

Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “We had to forfeit three weight classes due to sickness and injury. So even though it might look like we struggled a little, the guys who were there did a good job and I was happy with their effort. We just have to fill some of the holes in our lineup.”

Last Friday the team traveled to Greensboro for matches versus Greene County and Blessed Trinity. The match with Greene was a region contest, which the ‘Canes won, but then lost a close match to Blessed Trinity.

Justin Bradley at 103 pounds won two matches, Nick Tarleton at 112 won two, Edgar Perez (filling in for an injured wrestler) at 119 won two, and Timmy Postlethwait at 215 won two.

Prior to that match, the team traveled to Watkinsville for a four-team tournament including Oconee County, Franklin County and Washington-Wilkes.

The team was defeated by 12 points at the hands of Oconee, and by four points by Franklin, however, the ‘Canes rebounded to defeat Washington-Wilkes by six points.

Tarleton at 112 won all three matches, Matthew Chupp won all three, and Oscar Sandavol at 171 won all three giving him an undefeated record of 19-0 season to date.

Coach Rewis said, “I was a little disappointed at the results of this match, but Oconee has defeated us by 12 points before, and we did lose two of the three matches, but we really didn’t wrestle bad compared to past performances against Oconee and Franklin.
“After 20 matches we’ve won 14 and could have won more if we could get everybody healthy. We’re hoping we’ll get Brandon Barger and Jonathan Williams back this weekend and be able to be able to place in the top three of a 10-team tournament at home this Friday and Saturday.”

The ‘Canes continued to travel this past Tuesday when they took on Athens Christian in Athens, too late to report the results in this edition.

This Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11, the team will be at home hosting the Hurricane Duals beginning Friday afternoon and continuing at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday.

Next Tuesday the team will travel to Roberta and take on Crawford County at 5:30 pm.

The Middle School ‘Canes, under Coach Paul Stokes, traveled to Conyers last Saturday and completed in the East Metro Tournament with 10 other teams. Herman Bautista at 119 pounds placed first, Sam Ballew at 160 placed first, and Crescencio Peres at 125 placed second. Also, Niall Alhasi at 175 got his first pin of the season.
