Dorothy Jean Phillips
Funeral services for Dorothy Jean Phillips, who died December 27, 2010 were held Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at St. James A.M.E. Church in Monticello. Pastor Donna Marie Calix officiated; burial was in South View Cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips was born on August 13, 1940 to the late James Williams and Florence Jackson-Jones. She was married to Jimmy Phillips, and to the union a daughter was born, Annie Florence Phillips Jacobs.
Mrs. Phillips was a faithful member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Monticello where she served on the Ushers Ministry, Missionary Ministry and Stewardess Ministry. She was a former steward, and delighted in Sunday school and Bible study.
Mrs. Phillips completed her education and worked for Georgia-Pacific Corporation for many years before retiring in 1992 because of a disability. She was an active member of her community, often attending Monticello City Council meetings and kept abreast of issues facing the community.
Among her many civic activities, Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Willing Working Women’s club and the Jasper County Senior Citizens Club.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by brothers, Orlando Jones, James Williams and Michael Williams.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include grandchildren, Sommona Jacobs Williams of Marietta, Chandra Jacobs of Jacksonville, Fla., and Simon Jacobs I of Pittsburgh, PA; two great-granddaughters, Cynnia Jacobs and Samiyah Wright; five sisters, Carolyn Hill of Decatur, Earnestine Youngblood of Conyers, Anna Happel of Decatur, Birchie Frett Beverly Alexander and Brenda Young, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers, Merritt Jones of Powder Springs, Rudolph Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Randolph Williams, Claude Williams, Roosevelt Williams and Benny LaGrand, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a beloved aunt, Sarah Mae Bell of Monticello; a devoted nephew, Orlando Jones, Jr., and a host of other relatives.
Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
