Goats ‘Recycle’ Christmas Trees

Being that the Christmas season has now wound down, and the once beautiful Christmas tree that smelled so fresh throughout the home is now losing its needles, there are a few ways to dispose of them.
One unique way that is environmentally-friendly is to deliver them to Yellow Rose Farm, here in Jasper County.

Yellow Rose Farm is a small farm off of Johnny Fears Road in Monticello. On this farm Shannon and Jason Lawrence have cows, dogs, and primarily goats.

Mrs. Lawrence gave us (Hannah Pope and Summer Victrum) a tour and showed just what her goats can do to a Christmas tree.

She told us that the goats were Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats, and being what they were, ate everything.
She told us that she welcomed visitors and their Christmas trees to her farm for disposal.

She said that the goats eat every part of the tree and we saw that the only remains were the bare wood of the trunk.

She said that the trees are beneficial to the goats as they aid in worm prevention.

She also said that she liked the idea of keeping the trees out of the landfills.

Mrs. Lawrence invites the public, anyone with a tree either sitting in their front yard or on the side of the road to come out and bring it and the kids.

Her small tour was very informative and educational, and Miss Victrum got to pet the goats. She also learned about the female ‘milkers’ and about the ‘stinky’ males.

Anyone interested in taking their Christmas tree to Yellow Rose Farm and or meeting the goats, may contact Mrs. Lawrence at 706-816-9100 or e-mail questions to shanlaw1@gmail.com.
