Mat Cougars Compete at State
Rhett Roberts took fourth place and Patrick Berg finished in sixth to help lead the Piedmont Academy wrestling team at the GISA all-classification state meet Saturday in Macon.
Roberts competed at 160 pounds while Berg wrestled at 112. The state meet was hosted by Tattnall Square Academy.
Overall, the Mat Cougars were twelfth among 26 schools.
“I am proud of our finish,” said coach Darrell Young. “To finish that high as a team is an accomplishment since we only took six wrestlers. It was nice to be close to the top 10.”
Also competing for Piedmont at state were Mills Smith (125), Malik Reed (130), Evan Harvey (135) and Payden Cantera (189).
Trinity was the overall team winner followed by Westfield and Bulloch, who tied for second. Young said the tournament was well organized.
“The boys did really well,” said Young. “With just one senior graduating and several moving up from the junior varsity, we should be in good shape for next season. I am extremely proud of the way our season went. We should see bigger and better things next year.”
