Cougars Fall in Opening Round at State

The curtain fell on the 2010-2011 basketball season for the Piedmont Academy Cougars last week in the opening round of the GISA Class AA state tournament.

Facing the No. 1 team in the state, Piedmont dropped a 61-24 decision to First Presbyterian Christian Academy last Thursday in a game played in Cochran at Middle Georgia College.

For first-year coach Josh Daher, the game did not take away from what his team accomplished this season.

“They were just too strong and too fast,” Daher said. “I told our guys after the game they play basketball 365 days a year. That is going to make a huge difference.”

The Cougars took a step in the right direction this season, their coach said. “I look forward to having the summer to work with them,” Daher said.

“We didn’t have much of a preseason this year. We will work throughout June. We had players contribute this year who didn’t have to in the past. We have a good nucleus coming back and I believe the program is going in the right direction. What we accomplished this season was just a start.”

One of the bright moments of the season was an upset of Gatewood in the region tournament. That victory sent Piedmont into the state tournament.
