Piedmont Baseball Has Tough Week

COLE HAMILTON

Piedmont Academy’s young baseball team took one on the chin Tuesday afternoon falling to Brentwood 14-0.

Coach Danny Camp said his team simply did not do the things necessary to win. “It was a long day,” the coach said. “We didn’t have any offense to speak of.”

Prior to Tuesday, Piedmont hosted John Hancock and Loganville Christian Saturday earning a split. The Cougars dispatched of John Hancock 15-0 in three innings as freshman McKenzie Brittain earned the win recording five strikeouts.

He allowed just one hit, a double in the top of the third. Josh Brennan was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI while Hunter Knox reached base three times and scored twice. Camp said Brennan and Knox, being in the top two positions in the batting order, played a key role in the win by constantly getting on base. Cole Hamilton had a big game at the plate with a three-run homer. Hamilton finished with five RBI. Daniel Leinweber was 3-for-3 with three doubles.

Piedmont fell to Loganville Christian 7-0 in its second game of the day. Loganville Christian jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, which rattled the Cougars, Camp said, “They got four runs off a couple of errors,” the Piedmont coach said. “We began making the routine plays after the first inning. Overall, we played much better Saturday.”

The Cougars fell to Covenant 9-0 last Friday and 14-0 to Gatewood last Wednesday.

In Friday’s game, Camp said his team missed on its scoring opportunities. “We didn’t deserve to win,” the coach said. “We had the bases loaded one time and at first and third with no outs another time and only scored one run.”

Piedmont allowed seven walks as a team, something unusual for the normally dependable pitching staff. “It’s always going to be tough to win when you just put them on base,” Camp said. “We only had three hits and struck out five times.”

Zach Beggs had the lone hit for the Cougars against Gatewood.
“You can’t take anything away from them but only four of their runs were earned,” Camp said. “You have to be able to make plays and to hit the ball.”

Piedmont, who was scheduled to face Monsignor Donovan Wednesday, will travel to Central Fellowship Friday at 4:30 p.m. for a Region 1-AA tilt and to Nathanael Greene Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-region game.
