Lady Canes Tennis is 4-2 in Region

The Lady ‘Canes won third place in the region last Thursday, March 24, when they defeated Northeast Macon 5-0.

Emily Hallas won 8-1 in the number one singles, Kayla Bartlett won 8-0 in the number two singles, and Cortney Carter won 8-1 in the number 3 singles. Keosha Warren and Amy Labriola won 8-0 in the number one doubles, and Gabrielle Bautista and Keosha Warren won 8-0 in the number two doubles.

This win secured them a first round match versus the number six team in the region tournament in Morgan County scheduled for April 13.

Prior to the above match they did drop a match 5-0 to Jones County, however the boys picked up a win with a 4-1 victory.

Phillips Workman won 8-3 in the number one singles, and Deonte Norwood won 8-3 in the number two singles. German Garibay and Adrian Campbell won 8-4 in the number one doubles, and Walt Raven and Uriel Geribay won 8-2 in the number two doubles.

Last Tuesday, March 22, the girls defeated Lamar 4-1. In a best two-out-of-three match, Emily Hallas won 6-2 and 6-1 in the number one singles.

Kala Barlett lost 4-6, 7-5 and 7-10 in the number two singles. Courtney Carter won 6-4 and 6-1 in the number three singles. Katlin Needham and Amy Labriola won 6-4 and 6-1 in the number two doubles, and Keosha Warren and Gabrielle Bautista won 6-4 and 6-1 in the number three doubles.

The boys lost this match 1-4, however this loss came after a tremendous effort in three matches that lasted almost three hours each.

Austin Pierce won 2-6,7-6,7-5 and 10-2 in a tiebreaker in the number two singles. Donte Norwood lost 4-6,7-6,7-5 and 10-7 in another tiebreaker. German Geribay and Adrian Campbell lost 6-4,6-7, 11-9 and 10-12 in a third tiebreaker.

The boys also finished third in the region and 5-4-1 overall, and will play Lamar in the first round of the region tournament on April 14 in Morgan County. Both teams will have to finish in the top four in order to advance to the state tournament.
The boys and girls were both scheduled to play Alcovy, March 29, on the road, and yesterday, March 30 at home versus Jones, both too late to report in this edition.

These will be the last two matches in the regular season.
Head Tennis Coach Paul Stokes said, “These two matches will be some good competition for us leading into the region tournament.”
