Lady Cougars Close to Taking Region

The Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars soccer team rolled past Central Fellowship 10-0 Tuesday night and will look to clinch a region title today, April 28, when they return to the field.

Jordon Blackmon scored four goals Tuesday while Heather Tyler added a hat trick. Lanie King, Mary Ashlynn Dennis and Beth Anne Mahaffey also contributed offensively.

Central Fellowship fought hard but our skill level was a little higher,” said coach Jake Landress. “It was a great game for us. We needed to come out ready to play and battle aggressively. We did that.”

The Lady Cougars will host Monsignor Donovan today at 4:30 p.m. and look to capture first in region.

The Piedmont boys fell to Loganville Christian 2-1 Tuesday night. LCA won the first meeting between the teams 7-1. Landress was pleased with the improvement shown by the Cougars.

“It was one of those games where we just couldn’t finish,” the coach said. “We had opportunities in front of the goal. We did everything we were supposed to do. We played our hearts out.”
Rhett Roberts scored the lone goal for Piedmont.

Prior to Tuesday, the Piedmont teams fell to Lafayette Christian Monday at home. Both squads dropped 2-1 decisions.

The match was a non-region contest for the Lady Cougars but was a region match for the boys.

“It was frustrating because we dominated and were on their side of the field most of the night,” said Landress of the girls game. “If we could have finished our scoring opportunities, we would have won.”

The Piedmont boys took a 1-0 lead before seeing Lafayette rally for the 2-1 victory.

“They took advantage of the few opportunities they had,” Landress said. “It was a tough region loss.”

The Piedmont girls fell to Heritage 5-1 last Friday as Blackmon scored the team’s lone goal.

Owen Kimball helped lead the boys to a 4-0 victory against Heritage.
The varsity girls defeated Gatewood 2-1 last week while the boys tied the rival Gators 1-1. Since it was not a region match, overtime was not used.

The Piedmont Middle School girls lost to Gatewood 2-1 in their season finale. Taylor Swart scored the goal for Piedmont.

The varsity teams will also travel to Christian Heritage Saturday for matches beginning at 1 p.m. The state tournament begins the following Saturday.
