Couple Charged for not Educating Child

An arrest warrant was issued by the Magistrate Court of Jasper County last Friday charging Farid and Diana Manriquez with Mandatory Education of a Minor.

According to the arrest order the defendants allowed their minor child to have excessive unexcused absences despite the efforts of the Jasper County Board of Education’s (BOE) intervention. Mr. and Ms. Manriquez claimed medical conditions warranted the absences and attempted to document the absences and be cooperative with the school. They later withdrew the child from the school system and said they were going to home school the child.

Despite these claims the BOE presented evidence the defendants allowed their minor child to accumulate excessive absences and failed to establish evidence to the contrary. A letter was forwarded to the defendants on April 22 notifying them they had 24 hours to turn themselves in at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

Also, during the period of April 13 through April 25, the JCSO reported the following criminal activity:

•A theft by taking was reported at a residence on Eagle Drive in Turtle Cove in which an air conditioning unit was reported stolen.

•A theft by taking was reported by a residence on Eagle Drive in Turtle Cove in which a Goodman Heat Pump was reported stolen.

•A burglary was reported by a residence on Turtle Cove Trailway in which a hot water heater and a dishwasher were reported stolen.

•A burglary was reported by a residence of Stroz Drive in Monticello in which a Sony Playstation and a Madden game were reported stolen.

•A burglary was reported by a residence on County Line Road in Mansfield in which a Husky air compressor, a Dewalt Miter saw, a Graco Sprayer, a Troybilt blower, two sets of three each Eagle Claw spinner and rod, a Troybuilt weedeater, a buckshot stand, a table saw, and a Ryobi drill were reported stolen.

•A theft by taking was reported by a residence on Sandpiper Drive in Alcovy Shores in which a fish tank was reported stolen.
Anyone with information concerning the above incidents are encouraged to call the JCSO at 706-468-4912, or the anonymous tip line at 706-468-tips.

In addition, during the period of April 19-26, the JCSO reported the arrest of David Allen Nash, Jr., 22, of Griffin, and charged him with possession of methamphetamine.

During this same period deputies with the JCSO responded to 165 calls for service including 58 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, 10 subject needs officer, nine alarm, six each accident and threatening/harassing calls, five each assist motorist, mechanical break down, trouble unknown and music/noise complaint.

Also, four each burglary, livestock on road, argument and attempt to serve warrant, three each dog disturbance, theft by taking, pick up prisoner, road hazard and abandoned vehicle, two each intoxicated pedestrian, be on the look out, welfare check, and discharge firearms, one each fight, prowler report, speeding auto, escort or convoy, fire/vehicle, mental person, assault, missing person, juvenile complaint, private property, vandalism of property, checking location, persons refuse to leave, VGCSA, illegal dumping/littering, seizure and identity fraud/theft.

Also, during this period the Monticello Police Department (MPD) reported the following arrests:

•Brian Timothy Ramsey, 18, Shady Dale—theft by shoplifting.

•Sadarion Marquaylious Thurman, 22, Jackson—simple battery and cruelty to children in the third degree.

•Demetris Tremaine Thurman, 21, Monticello—Jasper County Probate Court failure to appear Bench Warrant.

During this same period officers with the MPD responded to 73 calls for service including 34 stopping suspicious person/vehicle, three each alarm, subject needs officer, juvenile complaint, and trouble unknown, two each speeding auto, escort or convoy, fall, music/noise complaint, persons refuse to leave and abandoned vehicle.

Also, one each dog disturbance, domestic, assist motorist, intoxicated driver, fire/brush, mental person, laceration, utility department needed, assist invalid, deliver emergency message, four wheeler, indecent exposure, shoplifter, vandalism of property and road hazard.

In addition, during this same period the Department of Natural Resources reported the following arrests:

•Dustin Lamar Anderson, 27, Jackson—possession of marijuana less than one ounce.

•Zacharias Seth Hudgins, 28, Jackson—possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
•Joshau David Batten, 29, Jackson—possession of marijuana less than one ounce.

•Dillon Dale Davis, 17, Newborn—possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
