Archers Turn Out for R-100

The R-100 archery shoot, featuring 100 different targets at and near the disc golf course at the Jasper County Recreation Complex attracted some 300 adults, and numerous children last weekend.
There was no charge for youth under age 14 to shoot, so organizers don’t have a good number of total people who participated, but said about 300 adults registered during the two days.
The rec department resembled an African safari as archers and visitors arrived, and they could trek through the course either on the “African” side or the “North American” side. Many did both sides…one on Saturday and one on Sunday. A few who had limited time shot all 100 targets in one day.
Sunday afternoon some 60 people participated in the “steel challenge,” and another 40 participated in the milk jug challenge. There was also a longest-distance flamingo challenge.
All the organizers thought it was a successful event, however with it being the first there were a few “hiccups,” said Mr. McGinnis. For example, the course was logged between the time the plans were made and the event began. Deer Capital and 4-H volunteers worked last week to get the course in good shape for the shoot.

Most of the participants were trying for their own best personal score…not really competing against others. A number of families were in attendance where mom, dad, boys and girls all took part. Jasper 4-H’ers on the archery team also took part, and several of the coaches were on hand as well.
Mike Pollard of Rinehart, the shoot sponsor, was on hand for the competition and after the targets were packed back in the truck Sunday, he headed to the next shoot. Adam McGinnis of Deer Capital, the local sponsor, said that the scores will be tallied and put on the Rinehart website after Mr. Pollard makes his next stop.
Mr. McGinnis said they were very pleased with the turnout. He said there were cars in the parking lot from five different states at one time Saturday. Many of the competitors stayed somewhere nearby, he said, taking part in the shoot both days. The Monticello Motel showed no vacancy, but it is not known of archers were the reason.
The recreation department offered hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks, and they reported making a profit. Recreation volunteers were assisted by members of the Jasper County High School fencing club on Saturday.
