Severe Storms Cause Some Damage, But County Fares Well Considering

One tornado touched down in Jasper County in the wee hours last Thursday morning, damaging four residences along Clay Road, and downing trees throughout the county, but causing no injuries or deaths.
The sirens which are located in Shady Dale, Monticello and on Jackson Lake Road (see related story, page 2) were activated and went off three times, warning residents to move to safer territory, such as a basement or inner room.
Neighboring counties were hit much harder than Jasper. Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel were to be in Jasper County yesterday to see if it qualified for a disaster declaration.
