Lady Cougars Clinch Region Title
The Piedmont Academy girls soccer team wrapped up a region title last week and will enter the postseason as a No. 1 seed.
The Lady Cougars will host Christian Heritage in the opening round of state play today, May 5, at 4 p.m.
Piedmont defeated Monsignor Donovan 5-3 last Thursday but had to rally to record the win. The Lady Cougars trailed 2-0 at halftime and 3-1 in the second half.
“Monsignor Donovan came out ready to play at full speed,” Piedmont coach Jake Landress said. “They were fired up and got two quick goals and we were in shock.”
Piedmont was able to recover from the slow start to score three goals in the final 13 minutes of play.
“It is a big accomplishment to win our second region title in four years as a program,” Landress said. “Very few of our players have competed high school. To be able to win against established programs whose players compete in club soccer says a lot about our players.”
The Lady Cougars tied Christian Heritage 3-3 Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
Piedmont’s boys will also host a first-round game after finishing as region runner-up. The Cougars are the No. 2 seed only after several tie-breaker systems were used.
Piedmont defeated Christian Heritage 4-1 Saturday in what Landress said was the team’s “best game all season.”
“We controlled the game,” the coach said. “Their lone goal actually happened when they were offsides. We only have two seniors. The majority of our team is eighth and ninth graders. To finish second says a lot for the team.”
The boys will host Robert Toombs Friday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of state.
