‘Canes Scrimmage GMC; Come Out on Top 34-14

The Monticello High School Hurricane football team traveled to Milledgeville last Friday and defeated GMC 34-14 in a scrimmage game.
Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts was complimentary of his team’s performance.
“On offense we accumulated a lot of yards. We were sloppy at times early on, but we got better as the game progressed, especially with our blocking schemes and adjustments. Overall I was pleased with our performance. Our offensive line showed its experience and improvement as all of our yardage came on the running game.

“The defense was also a bright spot and displayed a great effort. There were a couple of breakdowns we have to work on concerning the passing game. Our JV team played the entire third quarter and I was also very pleased with their play.
“Our special teams played well also. Dee Chapman made all of our extra points good and A.J. Thomas did the punting for us.”
The only injury reported for the team was an ankle injury by running back Chris Thomas, however Coach Roberts seemed to think he would be ready for action for the first game of the season.
Coach Roberts concluded: “We continue to work hard and get better. We had our best practice so far this past Monday. We have a lot more depth this year and it helps us to practice better and it helps the kids to work harder for a position.”
Action begins one week from tomorrow, on Friday, Aug. 26 when the ’Canes begin season play at home in a non-region game versus Monroe Area, a team a classification above them. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Rose Bowl Field.
