Middle School Lady Canes Lose Monday

Piedmont Academy’s Middle School softball team lost for the first time this season in a 12-4 setback to Loganville Christian Monday.

Haley Tyler was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI while Jordan Chandler had a triple, which scored two runs. Chandler also had a stolen base.

But the offense was not quite enough against Loganville Christian.

Matti Smith was also 1-for-2 with a run scored while also pitching two innings.

Other leaders for the Lady Cougars included Taylor Swart (walk, one run scored), Ashley Johnston (walk, RBI), Madison Burnham (1-for-2) and Anna Martin (walk, stolen base).

Piedmont defeated Briarwood 16-11 last Thursday in a game with plenty of offense by both teams. Swart drove in three runs for the Middle School Lady Cougars while Johnston finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Bridgette Phillips was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs while having two stolen bases.

Chandler was 1-for-2 with two runs and RBI while Martin was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lauren Mosley and MaKennah Holifield both scored two runs while O’Neil Sealy was 1-for-1 at the plate. Tyler was 1-for-3 and Smith drove in a run.

Smith pitched two innings while Mosley and Sealy both pitched one inning.

Also last Thursday, the sixth and seventh grade team defeated Briarwood 15-0. Johnston and Baylee Keesee both scored three runs while Mosley, Sealy, Burnham and Holifield scored two each. Maddie Mooneyham and Anne Marie Hildebrant both scored one.

“The last couple of games we have continued to play well at times,” said coach Dan Funt.

“The games have also shown that we have a lot to work on and that we are not unbeatable. We played a good team in Loganville Christian and they exposed us for some weaknesses we have. We need to continue to improve.

We have a big week coming up with games against Flint River, Gatewood and Tattnall Square. It should be a good opportunity to show that we can continue to improve.”
