Bats Come Alive for Lady Cougars
Piedmont Academy softball coach Danny Camp has been hoping his team would saw signs of life offensively.
The Lady Cougars have done just that in recent outings including a 15-7 win against Heritage in Newnan Tuesday afternoon. Carla Martin pitched another strong outing while Hailey Burnham helped lead the offense with a homerun.
It was the third region win of the season for Piedmont.
Prior to Tuesday, the Lady Cougars recorded a key doubleheader sweep against Christian Heritage in Dalton.
Piedmont won the first game 9-1 before earning a victory in the nightcap 9-4. Martin was the winning pitcher in both games. She went the distance in the opener and also started the second game before Kacy Swart closed the door.

“We played well,” Camp said. “We hit the ball all over the park. We had good defense and good pitching as well. It was nice to see us have such a total team effort. Everyone contributed in some way. We moved runners over and did well with our situational decisions.”
The region sweep could prove beneficial in a tie-breaker scenario down the road, Camp said. “Those were two big wins for us,” the coach said. “It’s not easy to ride three hours, get off the bus and go play well.”
The Lady Cougars also defeated Briarwood 9-6 last week.
“Briarwood has a good team,” Camp said. “They won the Class A title last year. We were able to wake our bats up.”
Burnham and Anna Jones help lead the offense while Swart earned the win.
“We played solid defense,” Camp said. “For the most part, Briarwood earned what they got. This game showed us what we are made up. We had to rally twice to get the win.”
Piedmont returns to action Thursday (today) with a key Region 1-AA contest in LaGrange at 5 p.m. The team steps out of region play Friday against Griffin Christian, also on the road, beginning at 4 p.m.
