Lady Canes Fall Short in Tournament

The Lady ‘Canes ended up with a 1-3-1 record in the recent Brawl In The Fall Tournament in Warner Robbins and Macon. The two final games of the tournament Saturday, August 27, were decidedly losses to Perry and Lee County, a AAA and a AAAA program.

On the preceding Friday the team did play well and played Columbus, a team with a 14-2 record, to a 4-4 tie.

Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “We played well in that game versus a top notch program with a 14-2 record.”

Prior to that game the team, in a strange turn of events, had to leave Warner Robbins and travel to Macon to play First Presbyterian Day (FPD) where they suffered a 7-2 loss. The lone win in the tournament came on the first day when the Lady ‘Canes defeated Hawkinsville 6-2.

Coach Jenkins said, “We had a rough first inning with FPD and never really recovered. They are ranked number two in the state and you can’t make the kind of mistakes we did against a team like that and expect to win. We really wanted to play in that tournament down there, even though it wasn’t the best thing for us to do schedule-wise, and that came back to bite us.

“But we were exposed to some great competition, saw some great pitching, and in the long run we’ll be better from the experience of it.”

In the middle of the Brawl Tournament, the Lady ‘Canes had to return home for their first home game, and a region game, last Thursday, August 25, when they suffered their first region loss to Lamar, 6-3.

Currently the team’s overall record is 2-1 in the region and 8-6 overall.

The team was scheduled to travel to Greene County yesterday, August 31, too late to report in this edition. They are scheduled to play Southwest Macon at home today, Thursday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m.

The JV Lady ‘Canes defeated Newton 22-2 last week and defeated Baldwin 19-1 Monday in three innings. The Lady ‘Canes jumped out to 10 run lead in the first inning. Many of their runs came from walks, but the highlight of the game was when Megan Roberts hit an in-the-park home run which scored two runs.

They were scheduled to play Newton again at home yesterday, too late to report, and Friday at home versus Lamar at 4:30 p.m.
