Several City Races Are Contested
Bryan Standifer will likely take the reins as Mayor Mayor of Monticello in January, as he was the only one who qualified to run by the end of qualifying on Thursday, Sept. 1.
Also running unopposed is Cornell Williams, who is seeking the council seat currently held by Molly Pompey, that of District 1, Post 2. The election to that seat is for a four-year term.
Mrs. Pompey is in a three-way race for mayor pro-tem. City Councilman Bobby Jacobs, City Councilwoman Molly Pompey and Sage Edwards are all seeking the post. Mrs. Pompey did not qualify until the final day of qualifying, Thursday, Sept. 1, whereas Mr. Jacobs and Ms. Edwards both qualified on the first day. As a matter of fact, everyone qualified on the first or last day with no one qualifying Tuesday or Wednesday.
Clinton Currie and Larry Thurman are both vying for the council post being vacated by Mr. Standifer, for a two-year term, District 1, Post 1.
Current Mayor Pro-tem Russell Gross is seeking the council seat being vacated by Mr. Jacobs and faces opposition from Randy Strozier. That post, District 2, Post 1, is for a two-year term.
For the District 2, Post 2 seat, incumbent Katherine Alexander is seeking re-election and she is being challenged by Demetria Phillips. That post is a four-year term.
After this election, council terms will be staggered, and all elections will be for four-year terms.
Roger Harrison also qualified for the District 2, Post 1 seat, but removed himself from the race after getting a promotion at work which will require a good deal of travel, making him unavailable to the city.
Any city resident interested in voting in the November 8 election may register to vote between now and Tuesday, Oct. 11.
