Remembering 9-11, 10 Years Later

Monticello and Jasper County joined those across the nation in pausing Sunday to remember the horrific events that took place 10 years ago on September 11, 2001, when terrorists struck American soil. Many Jasperites gathered for a candlelight ceremony held on the Monticello Square Sunday evening. They prayed for peace and reflected on the events of that day and what has happened since then. The brief ceremony was kicked off with a welcome from Monticello Mayor Glenn Newsome. Monticello Baptist Church Pastor Bob Whitmire (above) gave the invocation. Cheryl Jacobs read the names of people who lost their lives at Ground Zero who had Georgia connections. And, the firemen rang the fire bell—a series of five rings, five times with pauses in between. Many local firefighters were in attendance. During the ceremony, Eddie Ford played taps and Ella Heath sang Amazing Grace.
