SPLOST Passes; Run-off Set for Mayor Pro-tem
Bobby Jacobs and Mollie Clark-Pompey will be in a run-off December 6 to determine who will be the Mayor Pro-tem for the city of Monticello for the next four years.
Mr. Jacobs received 44.33 percent of the vote and Mrs. Pompey received 36.52 percent. Sage Edwards was eliminated after receiving 18.97 percent of the vote. Monticello voters will need to return to the polls on December 6 to determine who is mayor pro-tem.
Anyone who is registered to vote in the city of Monticello may vote, whether they voted in the regular election or not. Early voting and absentee ballot requests will be available as soon as possible, said Chief Registrar Carole Norris. She advised voters to call her office, 706-468-4908, to ascertain if they can vote in person or order absentee ballots.

In the countywide election for a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax to fund numerous projects, voters approved the SPLOST with 63.84 percent voting in favor, and 36.16 voting against.
The only other countywide question was to allow package sales of malt beverage and wine on Sunday, and that also passed, by a lightly narrower margin than the SPLOST. Fifty-eight percent of the voters said yes, and 42 percent said no.
In the city of Monticello, Councilwoman Katherine Alexander kept her seat, staving off contender Demetria Phillips by receiving 54 percent of the vote. In the other District 2 race, Randy Strozier defeated Russell Gross, 150-146.
In District 1, the only contest race was for post 1 which Larry Thurman won handily, getting 69 percent of the vote over Clinton Currie’s 31 percent.
The other questions on the ballot concerned Sunday sales in the city of Monticello, both in restaurants and package sales. Both questions were approved. The package sale question passed 56-44 percent, and the restaurant sale question passed 59-41 percent.
Bryan Standifer received 475 votes to confirm his election as mayor.
Some 19 percent of the county’s registered voters voted in Tuesday’s election.
