11-12 Year-old Canes Win Superbowl

The Jasper County 11-12 year-old football team won the Piedmont Football League Superbowl with a come from behind victory against the Spalding County Lions.
Despite being undermanned and undersized the young Canes team has proven that with hard work and team play anything can be accomplished. This was a season that almost never was. Due to lack of participation this team was in jeopardy of even being formed. Then veteran coach Jason Robinson pulled a team of local youth together and the rest is history.
He put his team in a position to not only compete but to excel in this tough Piedmont Football League.
“We started with a lot of young, inexperienced players that were hungry to learn the game of football. Over the last few months they have worked very hard to get themselves where they are today. All the credit in the world should go to them and their parents for all the support.”
The game began with the sheer size and physicality of the Lions overpowering the Canes as we quickly found ourselves down 13-0. With seconds left before halftime, the Canes finally struck to make with a 44 yard touchdown run from Matthew Lawson. After Chasen Edge’s extra point reception we went into the half down 7-13.
After the intermission the Canes came out fired up and aggressive. After a strong defensive stand by the Canes to open the half, Tyrin Lawrence found the edge for a 36 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13.
Midway through the 4th quarter after a fumble recovery by Drailyn Martin, Matthew Lawson sliced through the Lions defense for a 45 yard touchdown run and Malik Crawford added the extra point as the Canes took a 20-13 lead. On the Lions ensuing possession and with the clock running down, Matthew Lawson had a 50 yard interception return to put the game out of reach leading to the final score of 26-13.
