Mat Canes Are Undefeated

The ‘Cane wrestling team, in the fourth year since its inception, is 8-0.
Their latest victories came Saturday when they won four matches versus GMC, Baldwin County, North Side Warner Robins and Jones County, which gave the team their 100th career win.
Prior to this match, they defeated Jones and Crawford Counties at home the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
The three seniors on the team, Brandon Barger in the 195 pound weight class, Timmy Postelwaite at 220, and Mathew Chupp at 170 are all undefeated with 8-0 records.
Other wrestlers with perfect records of 8-0 include Pat Clement at 152 and Oscar Sandoval at 170. Also, first year competitors Victor Baustista at 126 is 4-0 and Austin New at 132 is 6-1.
Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “We are off to a pretty good start. We have some kids who we were counting on to be leaders on the team and they have gotten us off to a great start, and as individuals they have gotten themselves off to great starts. I have to be happy with our record.
“What I see different is that some kids are working on things which they know as individuals they need to do. We have a strong class of seniors and our practices are more intense as we try to get better. This is our fourth season and our goal is to get better.
“We’ve been wrestling some good teams but our competition level will be going up when we go to Oconee County. We were 0-4 against them in the past. We’ll also be facing Franklin County who beat us in a close match last year. We still have some kids wrestling up one weight class, so we’re working toward getting them into their best weight class before region competition comes around in January.”
The team was scheduled to travel to Oconee County Tuesday; the results were too late to report for this edition.
This Saturday they will compete in their first tournament when they travel to Veterans High School in Warner Robins. Weigh-ins have to be complete by 8 a.m., and action gets under way at 8:30 a.m.
