Peter Lawson is certainly going to have a tough time in his senior season topping what he and his team accomplished the past two seasons.

But the Piedmont standout is going to work hard to try to get that accomplished.

Piedmont’s Peter Lawson, The Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia GISA Player of the Year, rushed for 2,155 yards and scored 27 touchdowns this season.

Lawson and the Cougars won their second straight GISA Class AA championship with their second consecutive undefeated season. Lawson, “It was a very exciting year, very special for all of us to be able to do it again,” Lawson said. “It was harder than the first one because everyone gave us their best shot, and we had to be ready for that every week. That made this one even more special.”

Lawson rushed for 2,155 yards, had more than 200 carries and scored 27 total touchdowns. Lawson, who has started since his freshman year, also played middle linebacker and played on most of the Cougars’ special teams.

“He just had a big year; with everything we ask a back to do, to have those kinds of numbers it’s special,” Piedmont head coach Rhett Farmer said. “And then he’s playing such an important position on defense and rarely coming off the field; he just did so many things for us and meant so much for this team.”

Lawson will have one more season to carry that on. The Cougars have won their past 26 games and will be seeking their third straight title next season.

“We’re going to have to get after it in the offseason,” Lawson said. “It’s going to be special to try to win another state championship, but we’re going to really work hard and be ready for next season.”
