Teacher Feature: Amy Scroggs, Renaissance Woman

Amy McMichael Scroggs is a true Monticelloan having been raised here, graduating from Jasper County schools and returning to teach at her alma mater for the past 16 years.
She did not roam far from home for college either. In 1992, she graduated from Georgia College in Milledgeville majoring in education.
Her love of teaching began as a young girl when she would “play school” with her friends.
Besides her love of teaching, she gets her love of music naturally from her father who once had a band, and everyone in the family sings. At a young age, she began taking piano lessons parlaying it into a job after high school when she became organist at Monticello Baptist Church, eventually becoming music director. She taught piano lessons until two years ago.

Mrs. Scroggs currently teaches grades 9-12 Business & Computer Science which includes Business Essentials, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher. Her students also learn about financial responsibility, keeping a checkbook balanced, budgeting, paying bills and managing their earnings to meet their needs. She has a unique teaching opportunity as her daughter, a niece and two nephews are her students, and she loves that time with them.
She loves her close family ties, saying she talks to her brothers and her parents usually once a day and enjoys her immediate family numbering 14. Both sides of the family even go on vacation each year renting a beachside house in Cape San Blas, Fla.
While in college and for two years after graduation, she worked for the Jasper County Board of Education as public relations representative.
A true Monticello Hurricane fan, she has raised two children who are also Hurricane fans and athletes. Her daughter, Allison, a junior at JCHS, plays softball and her son, Garrett, an eighth grader at JCMS, plays football and baseball. Her husband, Gary, is her biggest supporter, and even though he grew up in Roswell, he too has become an avid Hurricane fan. Together, they have been very active in the schools and the local recreation department.
With all of her activities, she hardly has time for any hobbies besides reading her favorite author, Karen Kingsberry, who writes real life Christian stories.
Her New Year’s resolution is to slow down and spend more time with her children. Her daughter will be graduating next year and then off to college.
With all her talents, Mrs. Scroggs wears a lot of hats and is a true Renaissance woman.
We are truly lucky to have her in our community.
