Mat Cougars Compete at Trinity
The Piedmont Academy wrestling team made the most of its opportunity last week at a tournament hosted by Trinity in Dublin.
Even though the Mat Cougars were competing with just six varsity wrestlers, they still managed a top 10 finish in terms of team points.
Chance Perry helped lead the way with a 4-0 performance with four pins. Austin Corley was 3-1 and was third in his weight class.
Payden Cantera earned three pins and finished in the top six. Malik Reid earned two pins during the event while Mills Smith had one. Jacob Bowers also received plenty of mat time.
Ian Boyd and Mitch Marsh both gained experience at the middle school level.
“The varsity had a very positive tournament,” coach Dan Funt said.
“Our guys competed well, got some pins and a lot of good experience. After this past weekend, our guys have a good of idea of where they stand in the state.
“Our guys have seen almost every wrestler in their class that they will see at region and the state tournaments. However, we still have a lot of ways to improve, and with the meets we have left, we need to continue to improve. I would like to see all of our guys make the state tournament.”
The Mat Cougars will travel to Mt. de Sales in Macon on January 20 to compete in a four-school event.
