Cane Basketball Beats Putnam, Loses to Greene

The varsity Hurricanes came within seconds of a win Tuesday night when they were upset by Greene County 43-42. The game started off fast with both teams stealing the ball multiple times. The ‘Canes got an early lead with excellent play set ups and Cris Thomas on fire with 7 points in the first period alone. The ‘Canes were leading 13-11 s at the end of the first.
The second was even faster with a couple of free throws being missed and only 5 points being put up by the Canes. The Tigers took over in the second, leaving the Canes trailing 25-18 at the half.
In the second half the Canes played a tight game and the scoring went back and forth between the two teams. In the end the Greene County Tigers prevailed.

The scoring versus Putnam was led by Cris Thomas with 15, Brady McMichael with 10, Josh Stone with 8, going 4 of 6 at the free throw line. Deon Epps scored 6, and Tra Jackson had 2. Rebounds against Greene were lead by Thomas with 6, Jackson 5, and McMichael 4.
Head coach Ernest Scott said, “the kids are playing hard and I appreciate their effort in the classroom and on the court. I also would like to take this time and thank all the Hurricane Crazies who have supported the team thus far. We are playing OK, but still have much to learn. Our next hurdle is to finish close games. I feel that our kids are doing a great job and learning each day. We are a team who has chosen to work together to achieve a shared team goal.”
The Lady Canes played a good game against Greene but came up short at the buzzer, 48-44. They were down 35-27 at the end of the third, but in an exciting fourth closed the gap with Maya Stokes and Cristen Jackson both leading the scoring. The ladies played great defense while coming back. The ladies executed every opportunity, making plays look easy as if running drills at practice.
There was great defense by Janee Chapman, and Sharika Pennamon had several steals.
The Canes faced arch rival Putnam Co. last Friday at home and the boys won 52-45. Scoring against Putnam was led by Thomas with 16, Jackson, 13 points. Mr. Jackson was 7 for 7 at the free throw line. Also, Chapman with 11, J. Stone and Epps with 4, D. Stone and Destin Breaux with 2 each. Thomas had 12 rebounds and Jackson had 4.
