Cougar Wrestlers Head to Region

The Piedmont Academy varsity wrestlers are set to compete in their region tournament today, Jan. 26 at Mt. Vernon in Atlanta.

“Our goal is to get every varsity wrestler to qualify for the state tournament and then we go from there,” said coach Dan Funt.

“The state tournament is in two weeks at Tattnall. The guys have been training hard, and they need to continue to do so. The first step is to get to state.”

The region tournament will begin at 3 p.m.

In recent matches, the Mat Cougars competed Jan. 20 at Mt. de Sales in Macon. Mills Smith earned two wins by pin as did Payden Cantera and Austin Corley.

Piedmont also competed at Mt. Vernon back on Jan. 10. Jacob Bowers, Chance Perry, Smith and Corley all had two pins. Malik Reid and Cantera were both 1-1 with a pin.

In middle school action, Mitch Marsh was 1-1 with a pin.

Marsh and fellow middle school wrestler Ian Boyd have now completed their season.

“They both had a good year, got some great experience and saw where they need to be in a couple of years,” Funt said of his two sixth grade wrestlers.

“They improved their technique and strength, but they know they need to continue to improve in both. They did well competing as sixth graders against many wrestlers who are older than they are.”
