Canes Dominate Crawford Tuesday

The Lady ’Canes had a high scoring game Tuesday night defeating the Crawford Co. Eagles 55-27.

The lady starters came out ready to play and took an extensive lead in the first quarter, 21-3. The second quarter did not see much change as the Lady Canes played hard, and forced several turnovers adding 10 to their score by the half.

The second quarter was not different. The ladies hussled down the court tiring the ladies of Crawford out.

By the fourth period, Crawford could not seem to keep possession of the ball and the Lady ’Canes took full advantage of their weakness scoring 13 points in the fourth.

The scoring was led by Sharika Pennamon with 17, Janee Chapman had 10, Morgan Stokes added 9, Maya Stokes had 6, Cristen Jackson and Tierra Whitlock each added 4 and Miracle Hardwick, Alliyah Barnes and KeMari Wilson all had 2.

The ’Canes also faced Crawford Tuesday, and while the Canes took home a win, it was not an easy win. The final score was 64-60, a close one for the books.

A fast paced first quarter started as any other. Crawford won the tip off, but the Canes began to score rapidly. It took several minutes for the Eagles to come back, but they added to the board and the Canes only led by five (19-14) at the end of the first period.

During the second period the Eagles took over with their leading scorer hitting 21 points by the half. The Canes rallied together to complete perfect passes and great defense, to add 8 points to the board. However, the Canes went into the locker room at the half trailing the Eagles 35-27.

The break and inspirational words from coach Ernest Scott must have triggered something in the men, because the ’Canes came out of the locker room with an exciting third, scoring 23 points for the period. They were again back on top 49-35 at the quarter break.

The final period was intense and the defense for both teams took a toll. The Canes made a number of steals and forced turnovers but were stripped of passes driving for the goal.

In the end, the Canes prevailed over the Eagles, 64-60. Brady McMichael led the scoring with 18, Cris Thomas had 15 and led the ’Canes in rebounds, Josh Stone added 9, Xavier Chapman 8, Tra Jackson had 6, Deon Epps and Dondre Stodghill, 3, each, and Josh McMichael added 2.
