Diamond Cougars Fall to Brentwood Tuesday
The Piedmont Academy baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision at Brentwood Tuesday afternoon, but coach Danny Camp said he continues to see areas of improvement from his squad.
“We couldn’t get anything going offensively,” the coach said. “We tried to adjust, but couldn’t take advantage of a couple of opportunities we had.”
McKenzie Brittain earned the start and pitched well, Camp said.
“He threw strikes and helped keep us close,” the coach said.
Cole Hamilton also pitched Tuesday along with Glade Tuggle.
Hamilton was also 2-for-3 at the plate while Hunter Knox was 1-for-2. The Cougars are now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in region play.
“A loss is a loss and it hurts, but we played a good team,” Camp said. “We are continuing to get better. We made some strides against a really good team. We have to put this game aside and get ready to play again Friday.”
Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Diamond Cougars defeated Covenant Friday 7-2 for their first region win of the season.
Zach Beggs earned the win as the freshman went the distance.
“He pitched a gem,” Camp said. “He really had great command of his pitches.”
Hamilton helped proved a spark for the offense with a two-homer run in the bottom of the first inning.
“We made the routine plays you have to make,” Camp said. “Offensively, we put the bat on the ball. It was a much-needed win for us.”
Just prior to game time, a heavy thunderstorm moved into the area causing a delay. After the Piedmont and Covenant coaches discussed the situation, it was decided to try and make the field suitable for play. Two truckloads of sand later, the field was back in playing condition.
Piedmont dropped a 7-2 game to Gatewood on the road last Thursday.
One big inning proved to be the Achilles heel for the Cougars as Gatewood scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“The score didn’t indicate how close the game was,” Camp said.
Hamilton earned the start before Luke Andrews, Tuggle and Brittain also got pitching work.
“Overall, it was two even teams,” Camp said. “They benefited from that one inning.”
Piedmont will return to the field Friday when its hosts Central Fellowship at 4:30 p.m. The Cougars will also host Trinity Saturday at 11 a.m.
