Cougars Lose Tuesday

Piedmont Academy baseball coach Danny Camp was at a loss for words following Tuesday’s Region 1-AA contest against Covenant.

An 11-1 setback will often do that to a coach. The Cougars ventured to Macon in need of a region victory but were turned away.

“We just didn’t play well at all,” Camp said. “We’ll regroup and try again Friday.”

The loss dropped Piedmont to 4-5 in region play.

Prior to Tuesday, the Diamond Cougars ventured to St. Simons for a spring break trip with some time at the beach and plenty of baseball action.

Piedmont played three games in two days at Frederica Academy. The Cougars fell 3-0 to Tiftarea Friday afternoon despite a strong pitching performance from Zach Beggs.

“Zach kept them scoreless until the sixth inning,” Camp said. “Tiftarea then scored three unearned runs.” Glade Tuggle then worked a scoreless seventh inning. “We have a really good left-hander and didn’t have a good day at the plate,” Camp said.

Piedmont then fell 8-0 to Terrell Academy in the late game Friday. This was the only game Camp was disappointed in to some degree.

“We struck out 23 times in our two games Friday,” Camp said. “You can’t do that and expect to win. We played solid defense for the most part in the first game but didn’t in the second.”

The Cougars returned to the field Saturday to battle Class AAA Deerfield-Windsor. Piedmont’s McKenzie Brittain pitched well but was the tough luck loser in a 3-1 contest.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth when the Knights pushed two runs across.

“You never know what you are going to get after you have a few days off,” Camp said. “We traveled all day Thursday and then were on the field against quality teams. The games don’t count in the region standings so they don’t hurt us there.”

The Cougar coach said he continues to be impressed with the pitching effort of his team. Piedmont will host Brentwood Friday at 4:30 p.m. and No. 1 Bethlehem Christian Academy Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. The Cougars will play Loganville Christian after that Saturday.

Following the doubleheader Saturday, an alumni baseball game is planned. Any alumni interested in playing can contact Camp at danny_camp@piedmontacademy.com.
