Piedmont Boys Soccer Wins Tuesday

The Piedmont Academy boys soccer team continued on its quest for a region title Tuesday night with a 5-0 road win against Heritage in Newnan.

The Cougars led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Nick Adamczyk and Austin Bass after the match was delayed for approximately 25 minutes because of weather conditions.

“Heritage plays a very physical style of soccer,” said Piedmont coach Dwain Landress. “It was tough for us to get going in the match.”

After Adamczyk put the Cougars on the scoreboard, Landress said his team began attacking more and Heritage never had a serious threat on goal. Bobby Mitchell and Jeremy Wood were credited for their strong defensive efforts Tuesday.

Adamczyk added two more second half goals, one on a penalty kick and one on a direct kick from approximately 20 yards out. Hunter Clark capped the scoring with the team’s fifth goal.

The Cougars will need to defeat Gatewood Thursday and Christian Heritage Friday to claim the region championship.

The Lady Cougars played well overall Tuesday but fell 2-1 to Heritage. Landress said the team has a mental block in some ways against that team since Heritage has managed to defeat the Lady Cougars in previous seasons.

Jordan Blackmon tied the match at 1-1 in the first half. The Lady Cougars had additional scoring chances once the second half arrived but could not find the back of the net again.

“We were the aggressor late,” Landress said. “We just couldn’t get that one opportunity we needed.”

Heritage regained the lead with approximately three minutes left and would hold on for the win.

“We had a couple of chances in the final moments but couldn’t tie it,” Landress said. “It was a disheartening loss.”

Carley Cain played well once again in goal and Landress said Amberly Moseley excelled even thought she was used at various positions on the field.

Audrey Cleary also had a standout effort Tuesday night.

The Piedmont Academy soccer teams swept Lafeyette Christian Friday. The Lady Cougars recorded a 5-0 win while the boys rolled to a 7-0 victory.

Lanie King scored three goals for the Piedmont girls with Heather Tyler adding two scores. Blackmon had two assists while Moseley had one.

“We actually started the match playing well, but could not score,” Landress said. “In some ways, that was the theme of the match.”

Piedmont did take a 3-0 lead into halftime on two goals from King and one from Tyler.

“We had plenty of opportunities and we dominated the match,” Landress said. “It was a rematch from our first game of the season. We are beginning to get to where to need to be before the playoffs.”

King and Tyler added second half goals to put the match out of reach. Landress said Cain played well in goal, making some stops on breakaway attempts for Lafayette.

“I was proud of the way Carley performed in the game,” Landress said.

The coach also praised the effort of Kacy Swart, as the player has help solidify the defensive midfield position for the Lady Cougars.

“Kacy is always aggressive and never gives up,” Landress said. “It’s gratifying to me to see how far she has advanced and the impact she continues to have.”

The Lady Cougars also defeated Westminster last Thursday 4-1. Blackmon scored two goals while Tyler and King both added one.

The Piedmont boys got on the scoreboard first against Lafayette Christian on a goal from Mitchell after an assist from Adamczyk.

“That was an icebreaker goal because we were dominating but not finishing our scoring chances,” Landress said.

Davis Kimball and Adamczyk added goals for a 3-0 lead before Clark scored on an assist from Adamczyk.

“Hunter and Nick Dimsdale continue to improve their play each week,” Landress said.

Wood, a senior, converted his first goal on a penalty kick for a 5-0 lead.

“He stepped up like he had down it 1,000 times in practice and nailed it,” Landress said. “It was his first career goal.”

Dimsdale added the team’s sixth goal, keeping his streak alive of having a goal or an assist in every match he has played in. His goal came on an assist from Clark.

The final goal came on an unassisted play from Clark. The coaches then had the chance to get all team members game experience.

Chance Perry, Chris Coogler and Gabe Courtman each played well during their time in the match, Landress said.
