Qualifying Closes; Most Races Are Contested

Qualifying for the July 31 Republican and Democratic primaries, and non-partisan races closed at noon Friday with a few surprises and many contested races.

However, a few races are not contested, so unless someone qualifies as an independent, those people will be re-elected without a battle. Probate Judge Linda Mock Keller has no opposition. In addition, State Rep. Susan Holmes has no opposition. No one qualified for the Clerk of Court positon, but incumbent Dan Jordan announced long ago he would be running again as an independent.

The following races, and the candidates, include:

Sheriff–Richard “Rick” Cook, Donnie Pope and Bob Yarbrough, all on the Republican ticket, and Gregory Sands on the Democratic ticket.

Tax Commissioner–Angie Tarleton Steele and Angela Stone Walsh, both on the Republican ticket.

Chief Magistrate–Ken Jackson (I) and Tim Lam (non-partisan).

Coroner–Incumbent Billy Norris as a Democrat and Michelle Haddock as a Republican.

County Commission District 1–Carl Pennamon(I), Democrat.

County Commission District 2–Charles Hill (I), Democrat; David Bryant and Bruce Henry, Republican.

County Commission District 3–Jack Bernard (I), H.J. “Skip” Nowetner and Gene Trammell, Republican.

County Commission District 4–John Hooseline, Craig Salmon, Lee Simmons, Republican; Joan Bell, Democrat.

County Commission District 5–Alan Cox (I) and Doug Luke, both Republican.

Board of Education, District 2–Erin Lynch and Phyllis Carter Norwood (I), non-partisan.

Board of Education, District 4–Paul H. Kelly (I)

State Senate, District 25–Johnny Grant (I), Burt Jones, and Robert Kent, Republican; Darrell Black, Democrat.

U.S. Representative, District 10–Paul C. Broun (I) and Stephen K. Simpson, Republican.
