Eddie Smith, Jr.

Eddie Smith, Jr., 84, of Monticello, died Tuesday, June 18, at Coliseum Hospital in Macon.

Mr. Smith was born January 22, 1928 to the late Eddie Smith, Sr., and Mrs. Ida Fears Smith.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.

Mr. Smith married Birdie Lou Williams Smith on January 8, 1954.

He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and served as a devoted choir member.

His career spanned over 40 years as a self-employed logger as well as an employee with the Jasper County Public Works Department until retirement.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Smith and Albert Smith; six sisters, Mamie Louise Smith, Ida Jane McElheney, Littie Ann Smith, Elouise Smith, Millie Mae Smith, and Lizzie Kate Smith.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, survivors include a son, Marcus Whitlock, of Monticello; a brother, Jimmie Smith, of Monticello; sisters-in-law, Eunice T. Smith of Monticello, Flauzell Binford and Florence W. Joiner of Huntsville, Ala.; a devoted caregiver, Juanita “Goldie” Jordan of Monticello; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.

A service was held Sunday, June 24 at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Shady Dale. Rev. Frank Norwood, officiated. Interment was held in Shady Grove Cemetery.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
