Sara Clyde Banks Jordan
Sara Clyde Banks Jordan, 83, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at The Retreat Nursing Home.
“Clydie” Jordan was born in Shady Dale to the late O. H. Banks and Louise Young Banks. She attended school first in Shady Dale and then in Monticello. She was a member of Monticello Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Presbyterian Women’s work, serving on numerous church committees, and fed the local and prospective preachers on many a Sunday.
After attending Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia College and State University), she married Phil Jordan in 1947, and became a Navy wife, living in Boston and Norfolk before returning to Monticello where they remained. Together they raised five children, and worked vigorously in support of the public school system and its activities. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 14th.
Her first priority was her home and family. However, “Miss Clydie” also enjoyed several part time jobs over the years. She was a substitute teacher, a nursery school teacher, a clerk in the tax commissioner’s office, a poll worker, a cashier at a grocery store, a clerk at a hardware store, and a hairdresser at the funeral home.
She loved to travel, especially after her daughter Patti moved to Germany. She participated in elder hostels, and bird watching adventures. She was a supporter of Scouting, serving as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader for many years. She loved to sew for her children and their dolls, make quilts, and especially to cross-stitch. Her handwork was widely known for its beauty.
She was predeceased by sisters, Nancy Kelly and Sunny Lane.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by her loving husband, W. Phil Jordan of Monticello; children and spouses, Lynda and Joseph Gasses, Phillip and Miriam Jordan, Patti and Ray Lanier, Bob and Lynn Jordan, and Dan Jordan, all of Monticello; grandchildren, Capal Hadid, Anna Sitz, Joe Gasses, Cara Stevens, Wiley Jordan, Bekah Mullinax, Meredith Jordan, Jonathan Jordan, and Alex Jordan; great-grandchildren, Liam Sitz, Brae Hadid, Eli Sitz, Carson Mullinax, Grady Jordan, Amelia Stevens, Sadie Stevens, and Julia Sitz; sister, Ludy Peavy of Byron; brothers-in-law, Roy Kelly of Monticello, and John “Sonny” Lane of Macon; and aunt, Effie Banks of Shady Dale.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Monticello Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held in West View Cemetery. Rev. Rindy Trouteaud will officiate.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Joe Gasses, Wiley Jordan, Jonathan Jordan, and Alex Jordan, and grandsons-in-law, David Hadid, Josh Sitz, David Stevens, and Bobby Mullinax.
The family will receive friends from Wednesday, August 8, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home, 264 Hillsboro St., Monticello.
