Middle School Softball Battles Tough Foes

The Piedmont Academy Middle School softball team played twice Saturday as the 2012 season continues to progress.

The Lady Cougars tied Tattnall Square 3-3 and dropped a 3-1 decision to Loganville Christian Academy.

In the tie, O’Neil Sealy worked six innings scattering five hits and striking out nine batters. Sealy was also 2-for-3 at the plate.

Baylee Keesee was 1-for-2 with a run scored while Madison Burnham had a walk and a run. Lucy Tuggle drove in a run and Gracie Hunt drew a walk.

Against LCA, Lauren Mosley pitched well through six innings, said coach Dan Funt. Cassidy Cook was 1-for-2 with a run.

“We played well against two tough opponents,” Funt said. “I was pleased that we played with them, but I know the girls can beat both of those teams. We just have to keep working hard and improving every day. That will be the key.”

Last Tuesday, the Middle School Lady Cougars defeated Briarwood 19-7 and 9-0, in a game shortened by lightning.

In the first game, Tuggle earned the victory working three innings with seven strikeouts. At the plate, Tuggle was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Cassidy Cook and Hunt were both 1-for-2 with two walks.

Summer Strother connected for a homer and drove in three runs while also drawing two walks. Mattie Johnston was 1-for-1 while Bailyn Whitaker was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Kirkley Holifield drew three walks while Owens reached base on two walks.

In the second contest, Mosley earned the win and recorded four strikeouts.

Keesee had a triple while Tuggle finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Mosley had an RBI double while Johnston drove in a run and scored once.

Sealy was 1-for-2 and scored two runs in the second contest. Cook drew a walk and scored one run while Madison Burnham was walked twice. Hunt was 1-for-1 with a double, RBI and run scored. Rylee Owens drew a walk.

“The bats came alive which was good to see,” Funt said. I like how everyone contributed in both the games. Every member of the team did something good. The girls are working hard and trying to get better.”

The Middle School Lady Cougars are scheduled to travel to Windsor today, Aug. 23, for a 4:30 p.m. contest. The team will then host Briarwood Saturday at 1 p.m.
